  • 5 cups simmering water
  • 2 1/23 3/4 cups organic all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet (0.25 oz.) active dry yeast
  • 2 tbsp cane sugar
  • 2 tbsp melted vegan butter (plus more for topping)
  • 1 cup slightly warm water
  • 1 tsp salt
  • Coarse salt for topping

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, dissolve cane sugar in warm water and sprinkle yeast on top; let sit for 10 minutes until frothy.
  2. Stir in melted vegan butter, then gradually add salt and flour until dough forms and is no longer sticky.
  3. Knead dough on a floured surface for about 3-5 minutes until firm and smooth.
  4. Place dough in an oiled bowl, cover with a cloth, and let rise for 1 hour in a warm spot.
  5. Preheat oven to 450°F and bring 5 cups of water to a simmer with baking soda added.
  6. Punch down risen dough and divide into 8 pieces; roll each into ropes and shape into pretzels.
  7. Boil pretzels in simmering water for about 20 seconds each using a slotted spatula; place on a baking tray.
  8. Brush with melted vegan butter, sprinkle with coarse salt, and bake for 10-15 minutes until golden brown.
